It’s what every bride has dreamed of since girlhood – finding the perfect dress. And some say, as with spouses, the right gown is a case of “when you know, you know.” But what are some things to consider while searching for “the one”? We thought it’d be best to turn to the professionals who specialize in making dress dreams come true. Here, Lindsey Kerckhoff, of Unbridaled, and Emily Blanco, of Second Summer Bride, offer advice on what to consider before saying yes to the dress as well as a few tips for selecting threads for your bridesmaids.
1. Don’t settle for anything short of absolutely beautiful.
Lindsey: One of the most important things is for the bride to feel beautiful and be excited to put the dress on. When a bride feels beautiful in the dress everything else just falls into place.
Emily: I think one of the most important things to consider when wedding dress shopping is how each gown makes you feel – specifically if it makes you feel like you’re being true to your style, personality and budget. Your wedding dress is unlike any other dress you’ll wear again, so it’s important that you’re honoring who you are and where you’re at in life.
2. Don’t worry so much about trends.
Lindsey: When a bride picks the dress it pretty much always matches the feel she wants for the wedding – it’s a reflection of her personality and her style.
Emily: If you really love a gown but are worried that it’s too trendy or not timeless enough, just remember that the gown you love shows who you are right now and that’s fantastic.
3. Be brave and try on different styles.
Lindsey: Wedding gowns are made differently from street clothes, so it’s really important to try on the things you wouldn’t normally gravitate toward because you could be pleasantly surprised. People are usually amazed by how the different styles and fits of dresses look on their body.
4. Keep your girls in mind when it comes to bridesmaid dresses.
Lindsey: I think it is important for the bride to decide if she wants all of her bridesmaids in the same dress or different dresses. If everyone is wearing the same dress, then it’s pretty much up to the bride to pick what she likes. If everyone can pick a different dress, then usually they can pick something that flatters their body and works with their budget.
Emily: As far as searching for a dress for your lovely bridesmaids, I think it’s important to let their personalities show a little bit, too. After all, that’s why you fell in love with each of them, right? Every female has a different shape, different style, different fabrics she’s comfortable in – and complementing the assets of each bridesmaid won’t take away from the bride. In fact, it will make her more radiant as she glows next to her happy bridesmaids.
5. There are countless options for every budget such as reduced price boutiques or sample sales.
Lindsey: It is always a good idea for brides to check out a bridal store’s website to see what events they have coming up. At Unbridaled we have sample sales throughout the year, and they’re a great way to get a dress for 50-90 percent off.
Emily: For brides who may not want to spend a small fortune on a gown, for brides who want to wear a gown that’s been pre-loved or for brides who are in a hurry and can’t wait five to seven months for an ordered gown to come in, Second Summer Bride offers a uniquely fun and meaningful shopping experience because we offer designer gowns at significantly reduced prices, in incredible condition, all off-the-rack. My biggest advice for a bride on a budget is to be ready to purchase when you find it. You will definitely find it and often, it will be the only one, so grab it and go before someone else does.
